Bereavement support for our savings customers

We’re very sorry if you’ve recently lost someone close to you. We understand this is an emotional and overwhelming time, and dealing with financial matters may feel difficult. We’re here to support you and make the process as straightforward as possible.

Below you’ll find information on what to do, what documents you may need and where you can find further help.

Letting us know about a Bereavement

You can inform us about the death of a customer in whichever way is easiest for you:

Once you contact us, we’ll explain the next steps and support you through the process.

What we'll need from you

To keep the account secure, we’ll ask for your details and relationship to the Vida Savings customer, along with a copy of the death certificate (either by post to ‘FREEPOST VIDA SAVINGS’ or via our email address shown above).

The paperwork you need to send us depends on what savings account your loved one had. If you’re not sure or don't know how much money is in the account call us on 0345 6460 460. We won’t be able to tell you how much is in the account until we get the death certificate, but we’ll help you fill in the right forms. You don’t need to send us anything until you feel ready.

Accounts held solely in customer’s name

We’ll need the details of all the personal representatives for the estate, so please let us know these as soon as you can. This information will only be used to enable us to carry out your instructions for the account and to comply with our legal obligations. You can find out more about how we use personal data in our privacy policy . You will need to close any account held under the sole name of the deceased, however sometimes different rules apply, depending on the account type:

If your loved one has a Fixed Account only in their name, you can close it early with no fees or penalties and get the interest that has built up. Alternatively, you can keep it open until the end of its fixed term, and it must stay in your loved one’s name. At maturity, the account will need to be closed.

When someone with a Vida ISA dies, the account becomes a continuing ISA. This means:

  • It keeps its tax‑free status for up to three years and one day.
  • You can choose to keep it open during this time or close it and have the money paid to the estate.
  • No new money can be added.
  • After three years, the ISA must be closed and the funds paid out of the ISA (as it can no longer earn tax‑free interest).

Accounts held in joint names

For accounts held in joint names, we’ll remove the name of the person who has died once we’ve seen the death certificate. The account will then continue in the surviving account holder’s name.

Accessing funds before probate

You can use funds from the account to help cover essential expenses such as the funeral or any inheritance tax that needs to be paid. Please contact us and we’ll explain everything we will need.

What we need before we can release the money

  • If the total balance is under £50,000 – we’ll ask you to complete our Small Estates Closure Form.
  • If the balance is over £50,000 – we’ll need a copy of the Grant of Probate and ID for the executor.

These documents and Identity requirements can be found in our useful documents page: Useful Documents - Vida Savings

Once we have the correct legal documents, we can release the funds to the estate.
